The Maxton Board of Commissioners took action on purchasing a used dump truck to replace the one totaled. For the past two months, the town has been relying on a truck borrowed from the Town of Red Springs.

MAXTON — Commissioners here decided to purchase a used dump truck to replace the one totaled about two months ago.

The decision would have been unanimous if not for the dissenting vote from Commissioner Paul McDowell, who did not share his reasoning during a meeting on Tuesday.

The town has been borrowing a dump truck from the Town of Red Springs while Maxton’s has been out of service. The commissioners tried to decide Tuesday if purchasing a used truck, two used trucks or one brand-new truck was the correct route to take.

“Two used trucks cost the same as one new truck,” said Finance Director Myra Tyndall, when her opinion on the matter on whether to go new or used. “It would be easier to make a payment then to go into a project.”

Prior to the vote, Mayor Paul Davis suggested commissioners table his suggestion brought up at a special-called meeting held Monday which was to consider contracting out services for the garbage pick up.

“It is my position now and I recommend you to consider it that we delay doing anything on this particular matter and table it probably for another year and that has to do with the finances of the town,” Davis said.

Mayor Pro Tem Virgil Hutchinson said he worried that a whole new problem will emerge a year from now if the board still considers contracting out while trying to pay off two used trucks.

“How will that come into play,” Hutchinson asked Tyndall.

The town will consider the purchase of a 2011-modeled truck that includes a side and rear arm. This will allow the pickup to continue with just a driver on days that the Public Works employees are needed elsewhere.

“I’m worried about the year,” Town Manager Angela Pitchford said.

In other businesses, the commissioners approved a resolution authorizing the sale of four foreclosed properties via sealed bids.
