PEMBROKE — The Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina is hosting a Veteran’s Stand Down on June 15.
The Stand Down is an annual event that gathers various vendors, such as veteran services, social organizations, employers and businesses. The Blue Cross will provide meals.
Gary Jacobs from Veteran Services said that some of the available services will be disability claims and appeals with the Veterans Affairs (VA), and Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing (VASH) will assist with housing claims.
Free medical and personal hygiene services will also be available. Robeson Community College will provide free haircuts, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield will have a mobile unit on site that provides free prostate exams. Dental assistance and general health screenings will also be available.
Mental health services will be on-site for veterans to use as well. Studies show that veterans are at a 72% higher risk of suicide and suicidal ideation than those who have not served, according to a statement from event organizers. Part of their vulnerability to mental health issues is the feelings of isolation that many returning veterans experience upon returning home.
Jacobs said he wants to remind veterans that they don’t have to go through struggles alone.
“There are services available to help with whatever they are going through,” Jacobs said.
The Stand Down will take place in the Boys and Girls Club on 120 Youth Dr. It is open to all veterans.
