FAIRMONT — The town of Fairmont honored local Vietnam veterans ahead of Vietnam Veteran’s Day during the monthly board meeting on March 18.

Veterans Day

Mayor Charles Kemp honored all local Vietnam War veterans, past and present, ahead of Vietnam Veterans Day on March 29. Current residents Henry Caulder, who served in the Marine Corps, and Frank Evans, who served in the Green Beret Army forces, spoke briefly after Mayor Kemp read a declaration honoring them and all veterans who served in the war.

Fairmont Girl’s Basketball

The Fairmont High School girl’s basketball team was recognized for its achievements, including winning three conference titles in a row for the first time in the school’s history and winning back-to-back Robeson County shootouts for the first time.

Individual players were also recognized for their personal achievements.

Public Comments

Waylon Lennon said he had some issues with code enforcement in Fairmont. He mentioned several windows that are out or areas with structural issues and said he wants the town to do more about it.

Lennon also said that while he was initially opposed to the apartment plans the town passed, he’s hopeful that filling the new vacancies will help local businesses see more foot traffic and boost the local economy.

Audit Report

Fairmont received a good audit, finding no issues. The report was issued ahead of time rather than late, as was the case last year.

Approvals

The board approved the budget ordinance for the Community Development Block GrantDBG-NR grant, approximately $77k, to the Adams Company for the redevelopment of several community homes.
