LUMBERTON — A Rowland woman was killed Sunday night when a motorcycle she was a passenger on side-swiped a Jeep on U.S. 74, according to the state Highway Patrol.

According to a report filed by Trooper M. Chavis, two motorcycles were traveling east on U.S. 74 when one swerved left of the center-line and sideswiped an oncoming Jeep.

The motorcycle, driven by 43-year-old Christopher Brown, of Rosa Drive, Rowland, ran off the road and overturned, according to the report. Brown’s passenger, his wife, 41-year-old Scarlett Brown, was killed, the report said, and Brown was hospitalized.

The driver of the Jeep, 28-year-old Tyler Cummings, of Laurinburg, was uninjured when his vehicle ran off the road to the right and overturned.

The driver of the second motorcycle, 22-year-old Cody Barton, of U.S. 74 in Maxton, suffered minor injuries when his motorcycle was struck by debris from the wreck, the report said.

According to the report, the Browns’ motorcycle was traveling at about 75 mph in the 55-mph zone. The accident occurred at about 9:15 p.m. on U.S. 74 between Maxton and Pembroke near Cabinet Shop Road.
