ROWLAND — The Rowland Board of Commissioners on Monday approved the town’s budget, which includes no new fees or tax hikes for residents.

The $1.27 million budget was prepared by Oryan Lowry, the town’s administrator, and maintains the current property tax rate of 79 cents per $100 of property.

“Our budget’s balanced,” Lowry told The Robesonian. “Our collection rate, thanks to the efforts of the county, has increased tremendously.”

The budget, which was put on public display inside town hall at 9 a.m.today, includes no pay raises for town employees and no major projects — though money has been earmarked to rehabilitate manholes and repair the roof of Rowland Police Department.

Monday’s meeting was scheduled for the express purpose of slapping a seal of approval on the budget, which had been reviewed extensively by the commissioners.

The commissioners were originally expected to sign off on the budget during their June 9 meeting, but asked Lowry to make a last-minute revision to the document. The revision moved money that will be saved by the commissioners’ recent decision to switch health insurance carriers from the town’s expenditures to its contingency fund.
