ST. PAULS — A St. Pauls man was killed after his vehicle struck an oncoming car on N.C. 20 late Sunday night, according to the state Highway Patrol.

According to a report by Trooper M.J. Miles, Don Oliver Hunt Jr. was traveling west on N.C. 20 near Shaw Mill Road when his 1992 Mazda ran off the road to the right, swerved back onto the road, and crossed the center-line, striking another vehicle.

Both vehicles came to a rest, and the driver of the second vehicle — a 1998 Honda passenger car — left the scene of the wreck, according to the report. Hunt, 29, of Pages Lake Road, was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the report, Hunt was traveling at about 80 mph in the 55-mph zone, and alcohol is suspected as a factor in the accident. Hunt was not wearing a seat belt, the report said.

About $2,500 in damage was done to Hunt’s vehicle and about $3,500 to the Honda.
