LUMBERTON — Robeson County’s annual rabies vaccination clinic begins on Monday.

Through Friday, rabies vaccines will be provided by the Robeson County Veterinary Medical Association at a discounted cost of $5.

During the campaign, dog, cat and ferret owners can have their pets vaccinated at 32 local fire departments during a one-hour window.

Vaccines will be administered from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the following times and locations.

— Monday: Saddletree, Red Springs, St. Pauls, Rowland and Pembroke City fire departments.

— Tuesday: Fairmont City, Parkton, Burnt Swamp-Philadelphus, Maxton Southeastern, Smyrna, Rennert and Raft Swamp departments.

— Wednesday: Fairmont Rural, Lumber Bridge, Lumberton Central, Prospect, Deep Branch, Big Marsh and Northwoods departments.

— Thursday: Shannon, Britts, Whitehouse, Pembroke Rural, Smith, Sterlings and East Howellsville departments.

— Friday: Allenton, Queheel, Raynham-McDonald, Evans Crossroads, Orrum and Pine Terrace departments.

North Carolina law requires that owners vaccinate their dogs, cats and ferrets against rabies before they are 4 months old.

“Exposure to rabies is an urgent situation: Once symptoms appear, it is usually too late to start treatment and the disease is nearly always fatal,” an announcement from the association says.

According to the association, 751 pets were vaccinated during the 2015 campaign, down from 901 in 2014 and 1,758 in 2013.

The Robeson County Veterinary Medical Association will also hold its 13th semiannual spay and neuter program, known as SNIP, in September.

From Sept. 6 to Sept. 17, local veterinarians will offer the procedures at a discounted price. For prices and to make an appointment, contact your local veterinarian.
