Former student praises council candidate for leadership skills

To the Editor,

I am writing today regarding my experiences with Owen Thomas, a candidate for Lumberton City Council.

During a period in which I underwent one of the biggest transitions of my life, I can truly say Owen was one of the most influential people that I came in contact with during my time at UNCP. In a time where I was struggling with certain issues, I looked to Owen as a mentor, where he often provided clarity to me by sharing his own experiences and what he would do given academic or life problems and how to handle them.

I was also a student of Owen’s at UNCP, taking various business classes with him, where he served as an excellent professor, going above and beyond with students and faculty engagement. Owen also shared the importance of community and campus involvement with me, helping me get involved with Circle K International. The skills that I have learned from Owen have remained with me at my new school, the University of Georgia, where I have reached out to people to join service organizations such as the Pi Sigma Epsilon business and service organization, something I would not have done without meeting Owen.

Owen has helped bring out the best of me, and is an excellent candidate for Precinct 8 of the City of Lumberton. Without meeting him, I am certain that I would not be where I am today.
