Firing of Lumberton High coach violates trust, sets bad precedent

To the Editor,

I am writing to speak on an incredible injustice. The firing of Mike Setzer as the football coach at Lumberton High School wreaks of unfairness and mistruths. Mike was told straight up that his job was safe and that he had another year left to turn the program around with school leaders. These same leaders turned around and fired him at the behest of boosters and others because they threatened to pull money from the program unless Mike was fired.

The way the school handled this situation sets a bad precedent for students, faculty and fans and shows everyone else that wins are more important than teaching these young men basic core values. If you can’t take someone up on their word, then what do you have to hold on to?

Coach Mike really had these kids’ best interest at heart. He deserved another year. He was promised another year.

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the Lord pondereth the hearts.
