I am Burnis Wilkins and I am seeking your support for sheriff of Robeson County. My wife Jamie and I put God first in our lives and are proud parents of three children and five grandchildren.
I started my career in public service at the age of 16 as a dispatcher at the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office and joined the Northwoods Volunteer Fire Department. At age 18, I joined the Lumberton Rescue Unit, serving over 30 years as a volunteer EMT. I became a certified sworn law enforcement officer at the age of 20.I have over 36 years of experience serving as a special deputy United States Marshal assigned to a Violent Fugitive Task Force, Lumberton police officer and Drug Enforcement Unit supervisor, NC Department of Crime Control agent with Alcohol Law Enforcement, Robeson County Sheriff’s Office chief of detectives and supervisor of the Hoke/Robeson Drug Task Force.
I am a graduate of the NC Justice Academy’s Police Law Institute, hold a Criminal Justice degree and was recently accepted through college credit transfer to Liberty University to seek a master’s in Criminal Justice/Homeland Security. I am a 2012 recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. I received the “Outstanding Lawman Award of Robeson County” by the Lumberton Jaycee’s in both 1989 and 1992. I hold the Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate from both the NC Law Enforcement Training & Standards Commission and the Sheriff’s Training & Standards Commission. I am a state certified law enforcement instructor currently holding over 20 specialized certifications to include: Basic Law Enforcement Instructor, Active Shooter Instructor, Subject Control & Arrest Techniques Instructor, TASER Instructor, CRP/AED Instructor, First Responder Instructor, Explosives & Hazardous Materials Instructor, Bloodborne Pathogens Instructor, EMT Instructor, OC Pepper Spray Instructor, Physical Fitness Instructor, Rescue Technician Instructor, FEMA NIMS Instructor, Law Enforcement Instructor Trainer, Driving Instructor, NC Division of Criminal Information Certified, NCAWARE/CJ LEADS Certified, Simunitions Instructor, PADI Open Water Diver Certified, State & Local Terrorism Instructor and Methodology Instructor to name a few.
I retired from full time service in 2012 to seek the office of Lumberton City councilman. I was first elected in 2013 and ran unopposed in 2017, now serving my second term. I serve on the Robeson County Teen Court Board and also as an appointee to the State Legislative Action Committee in Raleigh. I serve as a Law Enforcement training coordinator at Robeson Community College. I have been a part-time instructor at RCC and surrounding colleges since 1986. During my tenure at RCC, I developed the “Driving While Distracted Course” for law enforcement and other first responders. I also developed the “Drug Investigator Institute Course,” which consisted of numerous courses and hours to achieve receiving the certificate of completion. I was co-founder of the “Public Safety Management Program.”
I am seeking the support of the law-abiding citizens of the county as I am not being supported by any special interest groups or persons. I will be a sheriff of all the people of the county. It’s no secret that drugs continue to erode our county and wreak havoc on our communities. If elected, I have plans in place to establish a dual county/multi agency Gang & Drug Task Force.
This 20-person team will be comprised of officers from all participating municipalities and a neighboring Sheriff’s Office with state and federal assistance. We will take an aggressive yet professional approach in ridding this county of Crime & Grime.
I will also be using Nuisance Abatement action to seize the property of drug dealers throughout the county. Our problems didn’t start overnight and I can’t fix them overnight but rest assured, action will be forthcoming to stop the invasion of criminals taking over our homes and causing death and destruction.
I will also implement the following programs of outreach to assist residents of our county: The Badges & Bibles Program, which will be an outreach to kids by voluntary participation or parental permission in hopes of reaching them through the ministry. Expanded Social Media Releases to keep you informed in real time as close as possible. Expanded Community Watch Groups across the county to better protect your neighborhoods. Kid Cadet & Kops & Kids Programs utilizing deputes and detention staff as mentors. Cold Case/Missing Persons Investigations Re-opened to try and bring closure to many families hurting in our county. And Inmate Labor to assist with trash clean-up and much more.
