LETTER

To The Editor:

I commend N.C. Sen. Danny Britt, R-Dist. 24 (Robeson, Hoke, Scotland), for voicing his support for the rescheduling of cannabis in his [April 19 Robesonian] op-ed “Opportunity for Change: Rescheduling Cannabis.”

His op-ed highlights very good reasons why rescheduling cannabis to Schedule III makes sense for patients and research and more specifically, for veterans.

Veterans face unprecedented challenges after coming home, including high rates of PTSD, which is known to be treated by medical cannabis; however, given its current classification, veterans are not able to even discuss medical cannabis as a treatment option for PTSD or other conditions through the VA, which is how many veterans receive their healthcare.

That is outrageous.

My fellow veterans should have access to medical cannabis, especially since there is so much evidence that supports its medicinal value.

President Trump has expressed his support for rescheduling cannabis as well, showing us he is ready to lead the way.

As a veteran and a state representative, I feel obligated to also voice my support for rescheduling cannabis to Schedule III. This change would increase access for patients and allow for expansion in research. Our federal policies should align with scientific evidence and the time for change is now.

Thank you,

N.C. Rep. Jarrod Lowery, Dist. 47 (Robeson County)
