LUMBERTON — The class of 2019 continued to show it was the powerhouse for the Robeson County high school softball teams once again with four county players being named to the North Carolina Softball Coaches Association All-State and All-District teams.

Lumberton sophomores Morgan Britt, Madison Canady and Kasey West were selected for the teams, along with JaiLeana Deese from Purnell Swett. All four have been varsity starters and key contributors the past two seasons, and have their coaches feeling optimistic on the future.

“The great thing about these girls is that they are all sophomores and we get to have them for two more years,” Lumberton coach Mackie Register said. “Every year you want to improve, and these girls are all working hard this summer. I expect them to be much better next year. It’s great that they were recognized with this.”

Britt and Canady were named Robeson County co-Players of the Year this year as sophomores. Britt was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year and Slugfest MVP this year, and Canady was also named county Player of the Year as a freshman.

Britt was dominant in the circle for Lumberton and had double the amount of strikeouts the second-highest pitcher in the SEC with her 220 Ks. That mark was nearly 40 more than the next highest pitcher in the state 4A classification. She also tallied up 18 wins and had a 1.88 ERA. At the plate Britt hit .375 in the No. 2 hole with 20 RBIs and 13 extra base hits.

Canady led the SEC in batting with a .561 batting average, led the Lady Pirates with 31 RBIs and six home runs and also scattered in nine doubles.

West also helped lead the bats for the Lady Pirates with 39 hits and also had had 11 extra base hits and 16 RBIs. Behind the plate she also gunned down five runners who attempted to steal against her.

“Kasey was the most improved this year and did well for us behind the plate,” Register said.

Deese led the team with a .443 batting average and had nine extra base hits and 10 RBIs. In her 95 1/3 innings in the circle, Deese struck out 71 batters.
