RED SPRINGS — Leading into high school football practice starting on July 31, The Robesonian’s sports reporter Jonathan Bym is publishing a countdown of the top 15 players in Robeson County, and Red Springs’ Nichorie West comes in at No. 6 on the list.
Red Springs coach Lawrence Ches has one word to describe West on the football field.
“Nichorie is a savage,” the first-year coach said. “Nichorie wants the ball and he will step into the huddle and say ‘I want the ball,’ and most of the time we give it to him.”
On top of the senior cornerback and wide receiver asking for the ball in big spots on offense, West yearns for the ball on defense, where he is one of the top returning defensive backs in the county.
“I’m wanting to get more than three picks that I got last year,” West said. “I want them to throw it to my side and then show them why they shouldn’t throw it to my side.
“I think they know that if they throw it to my side that it’s a good chance that it’s not going to be a complete pass.”
The defensive side of the ball is where the Red Devils return most of their experience and the returning All-County corner drawing the top wideout every team as a defensive assignment every Friday night is at the core of what Ches wants for his team.
“He’s the heart of the defense,” Ches said. “He took on the toughest assignments and didn’t have any problems. That our shutout corner right there.”
Wanting to continue to improve from last year, West has become more driven in his conditioning, weight training and as a leader for his final season.
“I’m taking the weight room more seriously than I ever did before,” West said. “I’ve got to get as big as I can and I ran track to get my speed for football. It’s all working to get me in shape. I’m not tired like I used to be last year.”
West wants to lead the way this year as a leader of a team that is full of underclassmen, mostly made up of sophomores.
“I’m one of the captains on the team. I want to be a leader and I want people to follow me buy in to what I’m trying to do,” West said.
