LAS VEGAS — Fairmont native William McGirt got off to a solid start in Las Vegas on Thursday, firing a 3-under 68 in the opening round of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

Starting his round on the back nine holes at TPC Summerlin, McGirt got going with a birdie on the par-4 12th hole before his lone bogey of the day on the par-3 17th.

He rebounded with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 1 and 18, moving to 2 under, and closed his round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth to finish three strokes back of Whee Kim, who sits at 6 under, heading into the second round.

Grouped with Ernie Els and Vijay Singh, McGirt will tee off at 3:45 p.m. Eastern time on Friday afternoon.
