RED SPRINGS — Behind strong outings from Caleel Mitchell and Monte’ Wilkerson, the Red Springs boys basketball team earned a 76-70 season-opening victory over Lumberton in overtime on Tuesday night.

Mitchell scored a game-high 22 points, including four 3-pointers, to lead the Red Devils (1-0), who had an 8-2 advantage over the Pirates (1-3) in the overtime period. Mitchell also dished out eight assists and grabbed five rebounds.

Wilkerson scored 20 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out three assists for Red Springs, which led 36-27 at the half.

Behind a team-best 20 points from Jordan McNeill and 16 points from Steph Lloyd, the Pirates rallied with a 25-point third quarter to trim the deficit. Kwashek Breeden and Lacy Mitchell each tallied 11 points for Lumberton.

In the girls game, Lumberton claimed a 58-40 win over Red Springs. London Thompson scored 16 points to lead three Lady Pirates in double figures. She also had seven assists, seven rebounds and six steals. Rachel O’Neil tallied 14 points and Madison Canady added 14 points and nine rebounds.

Taya Jones scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Lady Devils and Taylynn Atkinson contributed eight points.
