Local Briefs: Page sets school record in Rams’ loss

CHERAW, S.C. — Kyler Page set a school record in the Purnell Swett’s 102-98 loss at Cheraw on Wednesday night.

The junior guard scored a program-best 44 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double for the Rams (2-2, 0-1 SAC), who trailed by 19 points in the first quarter before rallying in the final period.

Darriante Parker added 25 points and senior Kalan Locklear tallied 14 points and 18 boards to log a double-double for Purnell Swett.

Cheraw (2-2) trailed 27-8 after the first quarter but cut the deficit to eight points, 47-39, heading into the half. The Bears would carry a 70-54 lead into the final period before one final push from the Rams.

Purnell Swett will be back in action tonight at Scotland (4-1, 1-0 SAC). The Rams will be playing road games until January.

On the girls side, the Lady Rams earned a 36-31 win for their first victory of the season. Purnell Swett, which trailed 15-13 at the half, used a 14-7 third period to take command. Nakyra Mitchell finished in double figures for the Lady Rams.

Travel hoops team holding tryouts on Saturday

The Team Thunder basketball club is holding tryouts for boys and girls on Saturday at Lumberton High School.

Boys ages 14 to 16 will compete from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by 11- to 13-year-old boys from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Girls from sixth grade to ninth grade will hit the court from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
