PALM HARBOR, Fla. — Fairmont native William McGirt brought home $77,296 after collecting a tied for 16th finish at the Valspar Championship this weekend at Innisbrook Resort’s Copperhead Course.

This was the second time that McGirt made the cut in the event and used an even par final round, and 3 under for the tournament to secure his third top 20 finish of the season. He also received 42 FedEx points and now sits 74th in those standings, after being in 84th last week.

“Valspar was a good week with my ball-striking but I fought my putter big time. I actually putted very well on Thursday but that was it for the week,” McGirt told The Robesonian. “I never could get anything going on Sunday but I did manage to make a big money putt on 18.”

After a round that had one birdie, two bogeys and 13 pars in the first 17 holes, McGirt rolled in a 15-foot putt on the 72nd hole to get back to level par on Sunday.

“The back nine was fun on Saturday. I hit a couple of good shots in a row and it kind of kick-started me,” he said of a four-hole stretch where he shot 5 under.

Paul Casey won the tournament at 10 under by shooting a final-round 65 to hurdle himself past Tiger Woods, who finished in a tie for second with Patrick Reed.

McGirt will tee it up this coming week at the Arnold Palmer Invitational hosted at Bay Hill Club & Lodge.
