PEMBROKE — The Purnell Swett baseball team has played one of the toughest schedule in the state, and on Tuesday the benefits showed for first-year coach Jeff Lamb.

The Rams scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pick up a 4-2 win at home over Jack Britt.

“We’ve battled all year, and today we finally got the break at the end,” Lamb said. “If you look at the last couple weeks, we went to extra innings with Pinecret and Richmond, and almost the same situation tonight, but we got the hit we needed.”

Noah Evington plated two runs in the sixth with a single that dropped into right field with the bases loaded to be the difference for the Rams (1-11, 1-6 SAC). Evington led the team with three hits, while Trevan and Noah Locklear each added a hit each. Ethan Wilkins and Dakota Locklear each had an RBI apiece.

Jeremiah Locklear held the Buccaneers to two runs in the second inning en route to picking up the win on the mound.

Jack Britt’s (7-2, 5-2 SAC) Kaleb Stewart had the lone RBI.

Purnell Swett picked up a sweep of Jack Britt with a 6-5 win in softball.

After the Lady Bucs (7-4, 3-4 SAC) plated three runs in the top of the sixth to tie the game, Purnell Swett’s (6-3, 5-2 SAC) Kaitlyn Hunt it a ground ball down the third base line to score MaryJo Wilkes from second base.

“Great job tonight by my young ladies,” Purnell Swett coach William Deese said. “Chelsea Jones came in and threw the ball really well, had them off balance at the plate for most of the game. Kaitlyn Hunt came up big in the bottom of the seventh with the game-winning hit. I am proud of our effort tonight, and our no-quit attitude made the difference.”

Jones pitched 5 2/3 innings and left with a 5-2 lead for the Lady Rams.

Madison Strickland went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for Purnell Swett.
