PEMBROKE — Next week marks the 10th edition of the Ben Miller basketball camp at The University of North Carolina at Pembroke for boys and girls entering kindergarten to ninth grade in the fall.

The individual camp runs from next Monday to next Wednesday at the English Jones Center from 8:30 a.m. to noon. Cost per athlete is $80 for any one who preregisters before Friday, and $100 for walk-ups.

“We usually get about 100 kids of all ages,” Miller said. “The best endorsement is the return campers that come back year after year because they have a lot of fun. It’s always been a real positive experience with everybody involved.”

Along with the individual camp, there will be a high school team camp on the following Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. The cost per team is $300.

Miller, who served on the coaching staffs at Kansas and Missouri State, has used his time at UNCP as a chance to add everything he has learned to the camp environment.

“I’ve learned different things from camps I’ve worked and coaches I’ve been with, but the main thing is we’re going to teach basic fundamentals and have a lot of fun with the kids,” Miller said. “We want to make sure they are having fun and learning to work together.”

The Braves are coming off their second straight season of winning the conference regular season and tournament championships, along with back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances for the first time in program history. Those players that produced the results on the court will be helping run the camp, along with the coaching staff.

“It’s a great opportunity to connect to the local community with all our staff and players working with the kids on fundamentals and having a lot of fun in the game of basketball,” he said. “It gives them a chance to get to know the community and kids that come to our games. We get a lot of return campers that come and get to know the players.

“The best thing is our players look forward to it as much as the kids. That’s been special to see that connection.”
