MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Fairmont native William McGirt returns to the FedEx St. Jude Classic, a regular stop for him on the PGA Tour since earning his card, this week.
The one time that McGirt didn’t make the trip to TPC Southwind in his eight years on tour was in 2016, the week following his win at the Memorial tournament. Of his six trips to Memphis, McGirt has been unable to find consistent showings in back-to-back trips.
He has made two cuts in six tries, with his last coming in 2014 with a tie for 32nd. McGirt’s second appearance in the tournament, in 2012, produced his best showing with a tie for 12th. Following that, McGirt produced three top-10 finishes to close out his 2012 season.
McGirt missed the cut from 2011, 2013, 2015 and 2017.
For the first two two rounds, McGirt is grouped with the defending U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka and the 2016 Open Championship winner Henrik Stenson. The group goes off at 7:40 a.m. local time from the 10th tee in the first round Thursday.
Daniel Berger is the defending champion of the event, after winning in back-to-back years, and tees off with Dustin Johnson and Austin Cook from the first tee at 12:50 p.m.
