Local players fuel Region 4 team on 1st day of state games

GREENSBORO — The Region 4 softball team, which has four local players on the roster, opened play at the Powerade State Games on Tuesday, split its first two games of pool play against the Region 1 and Region 2 teams.

Region 1 topped Region 4 by a 12-9 score in the opener.

Lumberton’s Morgan Britt knocked a three-run home run during the five-run third inning for Region 4. Her bomb put the team up 3-2. The last run to cross home during that inning came on a sacrifice fly from Lumberton’s Kasey West. Britt also added a double in game, while Purnell Swett’s Katlyn Jones had a single and run scored.

In the second game, Region 4 topped Region 2 in a 9-8 ballgame thanks to some early run support.

Britt had two hits in the contest, including an RBI single in the first inning. Region 4 scored all its runs in the first four innings. Jones had a hit and scored in the first inning. St. Pauls’ Brianna Brewer pitched the final four innings of relief, and struck out one batter, while allowing a pair of hits.

Region 4 takes on Region 3 at 9 a.m. on Wednesday to determine where it will play in the placing games later on in the day.
