Ernest King named Westover football coach

ST. PAULS — Ernest King, St. Pauls’ head football coach for the past two seasons, has accepted the same role at Westover, pending approval by the Cumberland County Board of Education.

King is an alumnus of Westover. He replaces Craig Raye, who went 4-8 in his first and only season with the Wolverines.

“It‘s always good to coach at the alma mater,” King said. “It’s a coach’s dream to make a difference in the community and coach at their alma mater.”

King said it feels bittersweet to leave St. Pauls, but the Westover job was an opportunity he couldn’t pass up.

King posted a combined 11-13 record in his two seasons with the Bulldogs. He was hired in 2016 to replace Trey Sasser, who was head coach at St. Pauls for eight years.

Before his stint at St. Pauls, King spent three seasons as head coach at E.E. Smith, going 21-15 in that span.

Westover opens its season on Aug. 24 at Lumberton.
