WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — With two tournaments until the start of The Open championship later in July at Carnoustie, Fairmont native William McGirt is on the outside looking in to the field for the year’s third major.

This weekend at The Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, McGirt can help his cause on a course that he has not found much luck at in the past. McGirt comes off a bye week to take on Old White TPC, with four spots at The Open up for grabs to anyone inside the top 12 and ties, who is already not in the field.

McGirt tees off with Peter Malnati and Nick Watney in the first two rounds of the tournament. The group goes off the 10th tee at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday.

In his four previous trips to West Virginia, McGirt has only made one cut, coming in 2013 when he finished 69th. He missed the cut in 2011, 2012 and 2015.

Last time out for McGirt, he missed the cut at The Travelers Championship. He currently is 117th on the FedEx Cup standings and 187th in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Xander Schauffele is the defending champion of the event, and is grouped with Aaron Wise and Austin Cook in the first two rounds.
