RED SPRINGS — Leading into high school football practice starting on July 30, The Robesonian’s sports staff is publishing a countdown of the top 15 players in Robeson County, and Red Springs’ Erney Revels comes in at No. 12 on the list.

Revels gained 40 pounds of muscle this summer after logging 61 total tackles last year, including five tackles for loss. Head coach Lawrence Ches said that improvement will help the defensive lineman get into the backfield this season.

“He’s going to be one of the most devastating defensive linemen in the conference and probably in the county,” Ches said.

Revels will be a key part of a defensive unit that lost Robeson County Heisman Jerome Bass, who posted a team-high 140 tackles and four sacks as a senior last season.

“Overall I’m just trying to make myself better and make the team better,” Revels said.

Revels transferred to Red Springs from Purnell Swett after his sophomore year. He quickly assumed a significant role in the Red Devils’ defense, and he said he wants to “dominate” in his final year with the program. This coming off an all-county season in 2017.

“We’ve gotten a lot better over the summer,” the senior said. “More coordinated and stuff. I’m really surprised. We’ve come a long ways.”

He said 7-on-7 scrimmages have been especially helpful in helping the team develop over the offseason.

“We’ve been able to place people where they’re supposed to be,” Revels said. “I feel like they make us better overall.”

Revels posted a season-high 11 tackles against Whiteville last season and fell just short of that mark with nine tackles two weeks later against West Columbus.

Red Springs begins its season on Aug. 17 at South Brunswick, a team the Red Devils defeated 33-0 at home last season. Revels tallied three tackles in that game.

The team’s home opener takes place the following week against newly formed Vance County.
