Three tied for Super Seniors lead at Robeson County Golf Championship

LUMBERTON — None of the 24 competitors in the Super Seniors Division finished under par in the first round of the Robeson County Golf Championships on Friday.

Donnie Beck, Cliff Nance and Atlas Warwick finished the round in a tie for first place after all three carded a 3-over 75.

Larry McNeill finished just behind the trio with a 76, and James H. Oxendine finished closely behind him with a 77.

Defending champion Knocky Thorndyke carded a 7-over 79. He turned in the same score as Willie Jacobs, who finished second in the division last year.

Thorndyke finished the tournament at 2-over to claim his victory last year.

After finishing in fifth place last year, Gerald Strickland got off to a slow start on Friday with an 11-over 83.

Sam Oxendine, James H. Oxendine and Lee Hunt will be the first members of the Super Seniors Division to tee off for their final round on Saturday. They are scheduled to start their round at 9:28 a.m.

The Super Seniors Division champion will be decided on Saturday. Three other divisions — Regular, Ladies and Senior — will begin on the same day and end on Sunday. The Championship Division began on Friday and runs through Sunday.
