NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. — Fairmont native William McGirt posted his third-best showing of the season at the Barbasol Championship this weekend that ended on Monday due to heavy rains over the weekend.
“It was nice to finally get something out of my rounds,” McGirt told the Robesonian. “I have been playing well for the last month but getting nothing out of it. I seemed to be shooting the highest score I could possibly shoot.”
McGirt finished in a tie for 12th following a 6 under final round to come up six shots short of Troy Merritt, who won the tournament with a score of 23 under. The finish is behind a tie for 8th at the RSM Classic and a tie for 10th finish at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
The finish sent McGirt home with $73,500 in winnings and 33 FedEx Cup points. He sits on the edge at 125th in the FedEx Cup standings with five weeks left, with the top 125 in the standings making the FedEx Cup playoffs.
In the final round, McGirt had seven birdies and one bogey, including four birdies on the back nine. McGirt was 13 under in his two rounds over the weekend.
“My ballstriking has been good but all of my putts seemed to burn edges,” McGirt said. “I wasn’t hitting bad putts, they just weren’t going in. It was a great sight to see the last few days.”
He will play in his fourth consecutive event this week at the RBC Canadian Open, where he posted a tie for second finish in 2013.
