County AD Fipps hired to take over Topsail athletic department

HAMPSTEAD — The Public Schools of Robeson County Athletic Director Jeff Fipps was announced Thursday as the new athletic director at Topsail High School.

“They’ve got a good athletic program and it’s a relatively new school, like 12 or 13 years old,” Fipps said. “I really look forward to getting back involved with the day-to-day part of athletics and I like that I can get back and be involved with student-athletes more.”

Fipps has served as the head of athletics and driver’s education in the county for three years, and has more than 25 years experience as a coach and educator.

He takes over a Topsail athletic program that recently was hit with controversy as the school’s principal, athletic director and baseball coach were all fired earlier this year. This came after the baseball team had an ineligible player that lead to the team forfeiting 16 games and were ineligible to make the NCHSAA state playoffs.

“It’s a new day at the school,” Fipps said about the department moving forward from the controversy. They’ve got a lot of good veteran coaches on staff and we can continue to build on what’s there and take it to another level.”

Also, Nick Raynor was announced as the baseball coach at Topsail.

No interim for Fipps’ position has been named.
