First-half scoring leads Pirates past Devils

RED SPRINGS — A first-half barrage of goals from the Lumberton boys soccer team was enough to down Red Springs on the road Thursday.

With a trio of goals in both halves, the Pirates got their first win of the season with a 6-2 victory.

Lumberton (1-1) scored two goals in a three-minute span midway through the first half when Nate Cribb scored off a pass from C.J. Nemeroff to make it a 2-1 contest at the 26-minute mark. Josh Britt scored on a rebound after his initial shot was blocked by the Red Springs (1-1) goalkeeper to make it 3-1 less than 12 minutes into the match.

Quinton Frederick scored the first goal of the match for Lumberton on a free kick in the seventh minute.

Red Springs answered with a goal from Rafael Valencia to tie the game at 1-all.

In the second half, much of the same came from the Lumberton offense that controlled possession for much of the contest. Nemeroff scored on a penalty kick with 38 minutes left in the game and the Pirates’ lead grew to 5-1 when Cribb added his second goal of the match.

The Red Devils answered later in the match on a goal six minutes later to make it 5-2. Less than 10 minutes later, before the Pirates posted their final goal on an own goal scored after Kameron Chavis put a ball in the box.

Lumberton travels to West Brunswick on Monday, while Red Springs takes to the road at Seventy-First on Monday.

Purnell Swett soccer earns first victory

PEMBROKE — The Purnell Swett boys soccer team broke into the win column against Marlboro Academy on Thursday with a 3-0 win.

Jafet Robles had a part of every goal scored on the night with a pair of assists on the first two goals, and then scored the final goal in the second half. Logan Scott netted the first goal and Zach Hunt found the back of the net to start the second half for Purnell Swett (1-1-1). Jalen Hunt assisted on Robles’ goal.

The Rams travel to West Bladen on Wednesday.

In other action across the county, South Robeson volleyball defeated West Columbus in four sets, while South Columbus earned a three-set victory over Red Springs.

Lumberton, Purnell Swett get first soccer wins of year
