ST. PAULS — The St. Pauls girls basketball team handed East Bladen its first loss of the season, and took over first place outright in the Southeastern Athletic Conference, with a 59-48 win Friday.
St. Pauls (13-1, 4-0 Southeastern) led East Bladen (13-1, 2-1 Southeastern) 26-17 at halftime.
Jakieya Thompson recorded a triple-double in the win for St. Pauls with 19 points, 10 assists and 10 steals.
Jashontae Harris, Tamyra Council and Taliya Council each scored 11 points; Tamyra Council had 14 rebounds and Taliya Council had seven rebounds. AuNyah Teague scored seven points with eight rebounds.
The scheduled boys game between the Bulldogs and Eagles was not played due to COVID-19 protocols.
St. Pauls’ boys play Scotland in Saturday’s MLK Classic at Red Springs; the Lady Bulldogs host Red Springs on Friday.
Brewington sets record in Rams blowout win
Purnell Swett senior guard Ethan Brewington hit a school-record 10 3-pointers Friday as the Rams boys basketball team earned an 86-19 rout at Douglas Byrd.
Brewington scored 31 points, scoring on his 10 triples plus one free throw; he hit five 3-pointers in each half.
Purnell Swett (5-7, 1-4 United-8 Conference) led Douglas Byrd (0-14, 0-6 United-8) 18-4 after the first quarter, 40-11 at halftime and 62-19 at the end of the third. The Eagles did not score in the fourth quarter.
Connor Harris scored 12 points and Christian Locklear had seven for Purnell Swett.
Lady Rams dominate Eagles
The Purnell Swett girls basketball team earned a 74-29 road win in United-8 Conference play at Douglas Byrd Friday.
Purnell Swett (12-0, 5-0 United-8) led Douglas Byrd (1-12, 0-6 United-8) 24-9 after the first quarter, 46-17 at halftime and 58-25 at the end of the third quarter.
The Rams host South View on Thursday.
