PEMBROKE — The individual postseason accolades continued to roll in for the 26th-ranked UNC Pembroke baseball team on Friday morning when redshirt junior Trent Harris and redshirt senior Christian Jayne both grabbed a s pot on the Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) All-Southeast Region squad.

The announcement marked the second all-region honor of the month for Jayne who was named a second team selection on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) team nearly two weeks ago. Friday’s announcement signaled the first career all-region award for Harris.

With his selection to the first team, Jayne will now transition to the D2CCA All-America ballot. The results of that voting will be announced in early June.

A weekend starter through the first half of the 2023 campaign, Harris moved into a key bullpen role in mid-March and responded by registering a 2.83 ERA and a pair of saves in 12 relief appearances and 28 2/3 innings from the hill. The Raleigh native sported a 7-3 record overall, as well as a 3.32 ERA, and logged 69 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings of work. When not seeing action from the mound, Harris pulled double duty as the starting third baseman for the Black & Gold and tallied a .305 batting average with 30 RBI and 25 runs scored.

An everyday starter in centerfield for the Black & Gold, Jayne compiled a team-best .381 (86-for-226) batting average in 54 starts this season to go along with 31 extra-base hits (6 HR) and team-highs in both RBI (59) and runs scored (72, matched school record). He also drew 37 walks and stole 41 bases, while also logging a .482 on-base percentage and a .580 slugging percentage. His 27 multiple-hit games, including a 5-for-6 hitting line at UVA Wise in February, was also a team-best. Jayne also registered 17 multiple-RBI outings, and scored multiple runs in 25 contests.

Four Braves golfers, two wrestlers earn Academic All-District nods

As a testament to all facets of being a student-athlete on the collegiate level, six UNC Pembroke student-athletes — four golfers and a pair of wrestlers — were selected as part of the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District At Large Team on Friday.

Golfers Toni Blackwell, Samantha DeBusk, Amanda Hamrin, Georgia Page joined wrestling standouts Loye Burkhead and Garrett Steele on the distinguished squad which serves as a prerequisite for CSC Academic All-America accolades.

It is the first-such honor for all six student-athletes who will all now move to the national ballot for academic all-America consideration. The results of that voting will be announced in mid-June.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.50 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) at their current institution. Nominated student-athletes must have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s competitive events.

Having already earned their bachelor’s degrees from UNCP, DeBusk, Hamrin and Page are all pursuing their master’s degrees in business administration and currently maintain 3.947, 4.0 and 3.986 cumulative grade point averages respectively. Blackwell has compiled a 3.984 GPA as a biology major at UNCP.

Burkhead and Steele both earned their bachelor’s degrees from UNCP earlier this month. Burkhead totaled a 3.606 cumulative GPA as a health and physical education major, while Steele maintained a 3.675 GPA while pursuing his degree in kinesiology.
