GREENSBORO — Robeson County had two wrestlers place in the top three at the NCHSAA wrestling championships in the 4A 138-pound division.
Purnell Swett’s Rommie McNeill came in second and Lumberton’s Jaden Jenkins followed in third.
McNeill became the second wrestler in program history to make it to the state finals, following Kenwin Cummings’ feat at 215 pounds in 2002. He lost to Ben L. Smith’s John Millner.
Jenkins bounce back from a semifinal loss at 138 pounds yesterday to claim third place. He topped Jamal Brannon in the consolation semifinals in a 2-1 decision and then claimed third place in the weight class with a 3-2 win over Isaac Byers, his second win over Byers in the tournament.
The Pirates other two wrestlers alive on the third day of competition were winless in theirbouts. Yakemiean Johnson lost by fall in the first period in the consolation semifinals and then was topped by Pinecrest’s Alex Contreras in the fifth-place match of 132-pound class.
Senior Chris Kelly was defeated by Ben L. Smith’s Miles Grier in a 6-1 decision.
