Robeson Jr. golfer places 7th
PINEHURST — Walter Ghaffar of Lumberton recently placed seventh out of 22 golfers at the most recent Winternational Series event sponsored by the Pinehurst Resort.
The event was held on the world famous Pinehurst No. 2 course on the first day and on Pinehurst course No. 1 on day two. Ghaffar, playing in his first event of the season, carded an 84 on the No. 2 course. He followed up with a solid 77 from the tips on No. 1 course, moving from 14th place after day one to seventh. Ghaffar, an 8th grader, will compete at Pinehurst course No. 5 on Saturday.
Pinecrest Senior Shootout
Clyde and Willie Jacobs continued their run in the Pinecrest Senior Shootout, beating out Joe Locklear and Mike Sellars in a playoff to win the championship flight.
Willie Oxendine and Richard Moore won the first flight, with J.T. Powers and Phillip Bradford taking second.
Willie Jacobs, Richard Lowery and Al Wall won the closest-to-the-pin challenge.
The next Pinecrest Senior Shootout will be Thursday with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
Fairmont Senior Shootout
Mike Graham and Alton Hagans edged out J.T. Powers and Brad Phillips to win the championship flight of the Fairmont Senior Shootout on Tuesday.
Ronnie Chavis and Delton Burns won the first flight, with Willie Oxendine and Richard Moore taking second.
James Humphrey and Tommy Belch took the second flight, with Tommy and Jimmy Dyson earning a runner-up finish.
Mike Sellers, Knock Thorndyke, Ronnie Freeman and Tommy Dyson were the closest-to-the-pin winners.
The next Fairmont Senior Shootout will Tuesday with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.
