Lumberton opens with wins over Fairmont
LUMBERTON — The Lumberton baseball and softball teams picked up lopsided wins over Fairmont at home to open up its seasons on Tuesday, with baseball winning 11-1 in five innings and softball winning 13-3 in six innings.
Morgan Britt led Lumberton on both sides of the ball by striking out 13 Fairmont batters and going 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs. Ariel Allbrooks went 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs, while LeAnn Nobles knocked in two runs and had a double.
Grace McMillian and Mya Hunt each had a RBI for Fairmont.
In baseball, Daniel Carter held Fairmont in check as the senior struck out three and allowed two hits in his four innings of work.
Dakota Sanchez went 1-for-2 with an inside the park home run, Kris Allen went 2-for-3 and Carter and Norris each tallied a hit for the Pirates.
Fairmont’s two hits came from Seth Thorndyke and Tyler Hodge.
Purnell Swett tops Red Springs for a pair of wins
RED SPRINGS — Ryan Graham allowed one hit on the mound for the Purnell Swett baseball team in its 14-0 win in five innings over Red Springs.
The senior pitcher pitched all five innings and fanned 10 batters on the way to the win. The Rams gave him run support early and often, plating at least three runs in four of the five innings.
Dakota Locklear had three RBIs, while Chay Locklear and Cal Hunt each tallied two. Chay Locklear was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles.
In softball action, Purnell Swett topped Red Springs 14-3 in five innings.
JaiLeana Deese picked up the win in the circle and went 3-for-4 batting with two runs scored for the Lady Rams. Kierra Locklear went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and four RBIs and Madison Strickland had two hits and two RBIs.
Kelsey Locklear, Kyra Locklear, Kaitlyn Culbreth and Marya Oxendine each had a hit for Red Springs.
Lady Rams soccer routs West Bladen
BLADENBORO — The Purnell Swett girls soccer team picked up a 9-0 season-opening win at West Bladen.
Abi Lowry and Tala Lowry each had a hat trick in the win. Bethany Hunt, Maddison Oxendine and Alexis Jones also added goals for Purnell Swett.
Lumberton tennis opens with win
LUMBERTON — The Lumberton boys tennis team earned a 7-2 win at home over Gray’s Creek on Tuesday.
Dominic Dent, Alex Wober, Josh Britt and John Floyd each earned straight sets wins in singles play. Dent and Wober picked up an 8-2 win in No. 1 doubles and Britt and Floyed grabbed an 8-5 win in No. 2 doubles. Cole Lewis also earned a two-set win in singles.
