PARKTON — Multiple law enforcement agencies continue in a standoff with a gunman near Parkton.

According to multiple sources, the gunman fired shots at law enforcement officers, and then holed up in a home. That standoff, which includes sheriff’s deputies from Robeson and Cumberland counties, police from Fayetteville and Lumberton, highway patrolmen, and SBI agents began about 4:30 p.m. Several SWAT teams have been called in.

Sheriff Kenneth Sealey was on the scene.

The situation is unfolding on McGiver Road, which has been blocked off. There have been many attempts by law enforcement through the use of a loudspeaker to get the person to surrender.

It began when a sheriff’s deputy went to do a “wellness check,” on the individual who is a military veteran and he began firing shots. A law enforcement officer was struck, but was not injured because of safety gear protection.

A person who lives near the scene told The Robesonian at one point he heard a volley of what he guessed was more than 100 shots.

The Robesonian will continue to update as information is available.
